Constructed during the British rule by Kernel Singh, a political agent, it was the first English medium school in the Saurashtra region. Originally called Rajkot English School, it was built in 1853 and became a full-fledged high school in 1868. Later the school was renamed as Alfred High School, after the Duke of Endinburgh, Prince Alfred, in whose memory the present buildings of the school were built by HH Nawab of Junagadh. This School was opened in January, 1875 by Sir Philip Wodehouse, Governor of Bombay. The school got its present name after independence as Gandhi did his primary schooling here.
